One Room Challenge {ORC}: A Modern Vintage Sports Bedroom

You may or may not have heard of the One Room Challenge which is a twice a year event.  Calling it Home hosts this event and chooses 20 blogs to participate.  Other blogs are free to participate as guest participants and will link up their projects alongside these 20 blogs.  This is a 6-week challenge to transform a room from start to finish.  Each week, on Thursday, I will post updating progress until the BIG final reveal on the last week.

If you are new to my blog, welcome!  I've been blogging here for around 18 months.  My Life From Home is a lifestyle blog dedicated to affordable fashion, home decor, DIY, crafts, and recipes.  It is my goal to help you live life to the fullest at home!  I'm so glad you stopped by!

This will be my first time participating as a guest participant.  I am super excited to be a part of such a fun event! I think the challenge to get it done in 6 weeks will be good motivation to kick it into high gear!

I have decided to do my son's bedroom for the ORC.  He has recently moved from a toddler bed to a big boy bed and his bedroom is stuck in that weird time between baby and big kid.  I am looking to move his room towards a design plan which will suit him into his teen years.

Here is the room in the Before state.

Yikes.  Embarrassing.

My theme for the room is going to be Modern Vintage Sports. He has several decor pieces we purchased when he was a baby that we will keep.  Everything else will go!!

Here is the Design Plan that I'm looking at.

Grant's Bedroom ORC

I want to do a mix of antique/ vintage pieces along with modern industrial elements.  On the walls, I am looking at a Board & Batton treatment which would go 3/4 of the way up the wall and then Sherwin Williams Naval on the top.  I want to incorporate sports pieces, but without making it look to “themey.”

Some of the issues that need to be addressed through the challenge:

1. New Wall Treatment: walls need to be updated to anchor the space
 2. Storage and Organization: as you can see from the above shot, toys are needing to be managed and organized

3. Desk: my son loves to do art, so I want to create a space for him to do his art and display it

4. Bed: he needs a big boy bed

Here are some inspiration pics that I'm using to get me started.

Six weeks will go by quickly!

To life feeling like home!

XO,

  1. Great post! Thanks for sharing. Anyways, if you ever damage your wall or ceiling, a repair is essential to resolve the problem instantly so the damage won’t get worse.

  2. […] Week 1//     Week 2//     Week 3//    Week 4// […]

  3. I’m doing my boy’s bedroom too… only a strict football theme. Just like you, I’m hoping it’ll last into his teen years. I LOVE your ideas for the space. If I had it my way, we’d do vintage baseball, but that’s just not Isaac’s “thing”. Good luck! Can’t wait to see how the room turns out!

  4. Love the inspiration pics and it’s so fun that you are doing a boys bedroom too!!! Can’t wait to follow along Amy!

  5. What a great project… Love the theme, especially that bed frame.

  6. Amy, your plans for your son’s room sound fantastic. I love how you’re designing it to meet his needs now, but to also work and grow with him into his teen years. Smart thinking! I look forward to seeing how his space turns out.

  7. Amy, this is too cool! I’m doing a vintage sports theme in my ORC husbands office room! Can’t wait to follow along, and I’m guessing this is where your cool new clock is going to go?!?

    • Amy says:

Yes, April. You will see the clock! 🙂 I can’t wait to see what you do. I haven’t made it all the way around yet. I’m sure yours will be amazing!

  8. Iris Nacole says:

  14. Rachel says:

Love the theme! Your design plan is adorable but will grow with him well. I used those same shelves to redo my husband’s office for the ORC challenge.

    • Amy says:

Thank you Rachel! I am excited about the plan, but nervous I won’t get it all done! :). I’ll need to check out your hubby’s office.

  15. Rachel says:

Oh, how exciting! I love theme and the pieces you have chosen.

  16. Sarah @ Little Red Brick House says:

Oh my goodness, Amy! Your design plan is absolutely adorable! I love the vintage vibe. Your little man is one lucky dude! Can’t wait to follow along!

  17. Sarah says:

Can’t wait to see it come together!

  18. I’m excited to see the industrial shelves come in to help organize all those toys! Is it bad that I’m already dreading having toys scattered throughout my house? Good luck with the challenge 🙂
