One Room Challenge {ORC}: Week #1 Functional & Stylish Home Office

It's Back!!

The “One Room Challenge” is a bi-annual event hosted by Linda of Calling it Home, where featured designers showcase their talents in making over a space.  In addition, the challenge is open to all those who wish to share a makeover of their own with the One Room Challenge audience, via a weekly link up party hosted by the site.  Linda has named those who do so, “Guest Participants.”  It has been a great motivation to keep up with home projects that I have planned.

If you are just finding me via the challenge website, welcome!  I'm Amy!  Currently I stay home with my three children.  I have been blogging for almost three years and truly love the experience and the people I've been fortunate enough to connect with.  I began blogging when I decided to leave my teaching career.  This has been a fun little outlet that has allowed me to pursue my love of home, DIY, crafts, and decor.  This will be the third room in our home that I've redone as part of the challenge!  If you did not follow along with last fall's One Room Challenge space, I redid my daughter's bedroom into a Modern Colorful Teen Hangout Space and the previous spring, I redid my son's bedroom into a Modern Vintage Sports Themed Space.  All the details of that reveal can be seen in this post.

Just like last time, it is a six-week challenge to fully complete the room.  Each Wednesday, over at Calling it Home, you can follow along with the featured designers.  On Thursdays, you can see the link up of all the guest participants and their week by week progress.

I’m excited to share the space I’m planning to make over with y’all.

Our Home Office

Our home office was originally our living room, so it is a large space which is open to the foyer and dining room.  This has always made it a difficult space to decorate for me.  It really needs to flow with the rest of the house and be well organized and not cluttery.  It has no closet and no overhead lighting.  The one amazing feature it does have is a wall of built- in bookshelves and desks.  Once we decided to make it into an office years ago, we had my father build us this amazing wall unit which flanks one whole wall.   We love it! It has cabinetry for concealed storage which we really need.

As our needs have changed, this space has become not only an office but many other things: a homeschool space, a craft room, an office, and a reading room.  I have arranged and rearranged this space countless times and just never really got it to work the way that I wanted it too.  The chairs in the space are super uncomfortable for reading. I also really don't have any space for doing crafts and blog projects, so I'm going to be looking for something to change that.

Now's the time!! With our Master Bathroom completed, I feel like I can take on this makeover and finally get it the way that we want!

Here's the current situation.  Not horrible, but not working for us.

It feels like way too much stuff and everything is lined up against the walls.

There is also a bay window to work with, but it has no covering.  I took the old broken blinds down and we will need something new there since it has a direct view of the street.  The black bench has since moved to our foyer where I like it's placement better.

So what am I hoping to accomplish with this room makeover?

Here are my goals for the next six weeks!

1.Paint wall unit white to freshen up the look.

2. Add overhead lighting.

3. A project table of some sort where I can work on crafts and blog projects.

4. A reading chair that is comfortable.

5. Freshen up walls with new treatment or art.

6. A new rug to anchor the space.

I'm thrilled to be working with Lamps Plus for this season's One Room Challenge.

Stay tuned each Thursday for all the details on how this makeover is progressing and make sure to check out the featured designers.

To life feeling like home!
