Three Things: Readying Your Home for Winter Edition

When I think of winter, I think of boots, blankets and a fire in a fireplace.  Even as our wardrobe is turned over to prep for winter adding in thick sweaters, hats, scarves and coats, our homes can be cozied up for the season as well.

Today I'm going to give you some tips to ready your home for the winter season.

1. Add texture: In warmer weather, we tend to like spaces which are lighter and airier. For winter, it's time to bring out warm throw blankets, extra pillows for your couch and wool rugs.  Just throwing a blanket over the back of the couch will encourage someone to curl up and relax.  I also like to have a basket full of blankets readied and available.  Another idea is to switch out your pillow cases on your throw pillows to warmer tones just for the season.

I love a cable knit throw.  The traditional winter sweater material is the perfect addition  to create a cozy winter home.

2. Candles: Since the days are shorter and we don't enjoy as much sunshine, to make up for that, stock up on candles to add warmth and light into your spaces in those cold, dark winter evenings.

I love the scent and the story behind Root Candles.  They are an Ohioan based family which started their own company.  All of their products are packaged in recyclable packages and infused with essential oils.  They have wooden wicks and are free of paraffin.

3. Try out some new recipes: Winter is a perfect time to try out some new recipes.  Comfort foods such as stews, soups, and casseroles are perfect for a winter night.

4. Smell Fresh: The air in our homes tends to get stale after being closed up for months on end.  Winter is the perfect time to add an oil diffuser or scented wax burner to your home.  You can go as far as creating a signature scent for your home each season.

5. Use your fireplace:  There is nothing better than a fire crackling in the hearth to warm your heart and body during the long months.

6. Spend time together as a family: Family game nights or movie nights are fun to plan when the weather turns cold and dreary.  Liven up your home by creating some new family traditions that you do just during the winter season.

What ideas do you have to cozy up your home this season?

To life feeling like home!
