One Room Challenge {ORC} Week #3: Functional & Stylish Home Office

Welcome to Week #3!

The “One Room Challenge” is a bi-annual event hosted by Linda of Calling it Home, where featured designers showcase their talents in making over a space.  In addition, the challenge is open to all those who wish to share a makeover of their own with the One Room Challenge audience, via a weekly link up party hosted by the site.  Linda has named those who do so, “Guest Participants.”  It has been a great motivation to keep up with home projects that I have planned.

The One Room Challenge is a six-week challenge to fully complete the room. Each Wednesday, over at Calling it Home, you can follow along with the featured designers. On Thursdays, you can see the link up of all the guest participants and their week by week progress.

If you visited last week, you see that we ripped out our ceiling and had 4 can lights and 1 flush mount chandelier installed to give us much needed lighting.

I chose this wooden bead flush mount from Joss & Main.  Isn't it pretty?

This week, was all about painting!  Our biggest project for this challenge is to get our built-in desk and bookshelf area painted to freshen up the look of the room.

Another painting project was happening on the other side of the room as well.  This gallery wall was transformed by chalkboard paint!

Here it is now after two coats. I chose Devine Color Quart Chalkboard in Green.

Chalkboard Paint- chalkboard wall- how to paint a chalkboard wall- seasoning a chalkboard- green chalkboard paint- One Room Challenge

The key to making sure a chalkboard work like it should and erase easily without leaving residue is to “season” the board/ wall with the side of a stick of chalk.  After your paint dries, cover the entire surface with chalk and wipe off with a soft rag or chalkboard eraser.  It is then ready to use!

So what am I hoping to accomplish with this room makeover?

Here are my goals for the next six weeks!

1. Paint wall unit white to freshen up the space.

2.Add Overhead Lighting.

3. A project table of some sort where I can work on crafts and blog projects.

4. A reading chair that is comfortable.

5. Freshen up walls with new treatment and art.

6. A rug to anchor the space.

Be sure to check out the Week #3 progress of the Featured Designers over at Calling it Home.

To life feeling like home!

XO,

  1. Emily says:

We did built-ins in my husband’s office, I’m sure it was a ton of work to paint, but you’re so lucky to have already had that! Thanks for linking up to #HomeMattersParty

  2. Love how you have updated your built ins. I wish I had a space like that. Pinned & sharing Thanks for joining the Inspiration Spotlight party.

  3. That light fixture is amazing. Your space is looking so good!

  4. Melissa says:

That room turned out beautifully! I love that nailhead trim on the shelves! Thanks for sharing at the Family Joy Blog Link Party this week!

  5. I love all that storage space in your built-ins. Painting it all white really makes it look so fresh and clean. A chalkboard wall in an office would be so useful!

  6. Sarah says:

This space is really starting to come together. Your work area is looking really fresh already!

The white paint has given the built ins new life! They look so fresh (but also expensive) with their new coat ; )

  9. Zan Turner says:

The chandelier is so pretty. I love how the built-ins are turning out and the idea of adding a chalkboard wall. It makes sense to have your office ‘work’ and function for you if you work from home.
