Wow! We made it! It is Week #6 of the One Room Challenge and today is REVEAL DAY! I am truly thankful that you've chosen to follow along with my progress each week. It has been a fun process seeing this space transform into a functional and stylish space with the reveal of a functional & stylish home office ideas that our whole family is now enjoying!
This is my 3rd time participating in the ORC. For my first challenge, I redid my son's bedroom into a Modern Vintage Sports Themed Bedroom and my second challenge, I redid my oldest daughter's bedroom into a Colorful and Modern Teen Hangout Space.
As I know from earlier challenges, it is always worth it in the end. When you look back from Week #1 to Week #6, it is thrilling to see how far you've come! If you can remember, we started with good bones; a built-in wall of shelving and two desks and a bay window. The rest of the space lacked lighting, function, and style.
My design idea for this room was, to begin with, neutrals and then add green to the mix. The space flows openly to the dining room, so the room colors needed to coordinate with one another. My home office ideas board was my jumping off point.
As you'll see from the reveal below, I stuck to this basic plan with the exception of the graphic wallpaper. I ordered it and when it arrived, it just seemed way to busy for everything going on in the space! However, All the other elements of my home office ideas plan fit nicely into our new room!
With just six weeks to redo the space, we tackled some big projects.
Goals!
1. Paint wall unit white to freshen up the space.
2. Add overhead lighting.
3. A project table of some sort where I can work on crafts and blog projects.
4. A reading chair that is comfortable.
5. Freshen up the walls with new treatment and art.
6. A rug to anchor the space.
Week to week progress and a good plan brought us to the point where we were almost complete with the room by Week #5. Thankfully, no unforeseen setbacks occurred! You always have to be ready for that when you are doing any kind of room renovation. This time, amazingly, things went as planned!
Here is a look back at each week.
Week #1 | Week #2 | Week #3 | Week #4 | Week #5
Ok, it is time for you to see all the pretty stuff! Prepare yourself for picture overload and be sure to make your way all the way to the bottom for a source list! I did my best at photographing this space. It is long and narrow and has lots of light coming in on only one side, so it is difficult to capture the whole space! You'll see also, that this is a working office space and some home office ideas. Besides the kitchen, it is probably the space we use the most in our home. I wanted to fill it with items we love like family pictures and functional storage. I used a lot of labeled storage boxes, caddies, jars, and baskets to store the items we need for this space. It's definitely not just a showplace, but a hardworking, multifunctional space! You'll see some cords which I did my best to hide, but really that's reality, right?
I hope you like it as much as we do! I'd love to hear from you in the comments!!
The reading nook is now my favorite spot for morning devotions before I begin my work. You can see how I painted this antique side table this pretty green, HERE. I decided on two rugs for this space and this cheetah one anchors that little area all to itself. A stack of books makes for a nice display beside the chair and I like to throw the ones I'm reading in the DIY sisal basket on top.
Our desk areas are stocked full of storage for craft supplies, homeschooling materials, office paperwork, and books. Both desks now have enough lighting and I love the fresh new white paint color! My vintage camera collection is mixed in nicely with our storage components.
My new favorite spot in the room is my chalkboard wall with my project table. I love this area for working on crafts and spreading out our projects. My antique chest of drawers fits perfectly in the corner and houses larger items like my Cricut supplies and hardware items like paint. My table is the perfect size to get to work! You can see how I glazed the base of the table over at this post HERE. My book page flower was also a DIY project. The full tutorial is HERE.
EEk!! So glad to have this new space for reading, working, and crafting! Thanks so much for following along on this season's One Room Challenge!

Hi Amy, I know this post is a few years old but I stumbled upon it after scouring Pinterest for ideas on my home office makeover. Your built-in desk area is EXACTLY what I am looking for. I am struggling to find desk cabinets to use as a base. One of your comments indicated they were stock Home Depot cabinets. Are they base kitchen cabinets? What did you use for the top of them and the desk? Any details you can provide are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much! You did a wonderful job! 🙂
A clean office setup with good furniture is good to have in the house. They increase the value dramatically and have a wider market to target when you renovate a house.
I stumbled across your post, and I’m wondering where the hanging cups holding pencils, markers, etc came from? I can’t find any that I like as much as those!! Your office rspace is beautiful…I will be stealing some ideas for my own ????
Thank you! Glad you found me! The hanging unit is from IKEA. They have various combinations of items to hang for storage. It’s a pretty neat little system.
Hi! I just love what you did with this space! Could you please tell me what kind of paint & which color you used on your built ins? Also, did you brush, roll or paint it on? Did you have to prime it?! If you could tell me all the steps you did I would appreciate it!! You did an amazing job!!
Hi, Gretchen. Thank you for your kind words. We did prime it and then followed it with a basic flat white Sherwin Williams paint. We rolled it on as much as we could brushes the edges. It was a big job, but so worth it! If you read up on this post, https://mylifefromhome.com/diy-how-i-painted-my-kitchen-cabinets/ it is a great step by step on painting cabinets!
Is the wall unit a custom piece or is it modular? Could you please offer details? Thanks!
Thank you! It is a built-in piece we had made to fit our space.
Where did you get the items to create that built in?
Hi, Brook! The cabinets are stock cabinets from Home Depot and the shelving was made to fit our space.
