My Best Tips on Prepping Your Home for Sale

With a few extra steps, you can prep your home for sale and create a show worthy space! 

As most of you know, we sold our house and are packing to move in a few short weeks. Today I want to share a few little tips we used to prep our home for listing. A little extra effort before listing will be well worth your time in the long run. Hopefully that time will turn into dollar signs when you sell!

Prep your home for sale with these quick tips!

• Think paint: You’ve always heard that a house should be all neutral for showing, but I actually disagree with that advice. I don’t necessarily think an all white home will be more appealing. What I do think is your house should flow color wise in an appealing way. Every room a different color is overwhelming for someone to think about painting over, so avoid the rainbow look or anything way too bright. If you have a rainbowbrite home, consider painting before listing. All white can appear sterile to some, so instead choose an appealing palette that is easy for any design style to mesh with. Also make sure to touch up nicks and smudges on your walls.
• Edit, Edit, Edit: Make sure your rooms are open and airy. Remove excess furniture and clutter. You don’t have to box up all your personal items, but you want people to see the bones of your home and not just all your “stuff. Keep it clean and simple.

• Pull back the curtains: You might love those blackout curtains for your room but consider changing those out. There’s nothing worse than a dark house. People want to see natural light, so give it to them! Open those blinds, remove those dark curtains and shed some light on the space. • Lighten it up: Tagging on to my above point, consider your lighting. Do you have sufficient lighting in your spaces? If someone comes through to see your house in the evening, will they be left in the dark or are your spaces light and bright? A few simple table lamps can create cozy little corners in your rooms for not a lot of cost.

• Clean it Up: This seems obvious, but even just today I went through a condo my parents are considering buying and it was dirty. Scrub that puppy like there’s no tomorrow! Polish it and make small repairs, clean the carpeting, make it shine.

Your goal is to create a home that when people walk in, they can picture themselves living there. It’s all about the feeling you give them. You want to show them that it’s a home that’s been loved and well cared for.

Put your buying goggles on and look at your home a different way. We all get used to our own scuffed paint and nicked up woodwork, but that just might be the first thing a buyer notices and that might signal lots of work for them.
