Keeping an organized and tidy closet has always been difficult for me. I have attempted on many occasions to organize my closet only to have to reorganize it again in a short time because it became a huge mess. I recently watched a show on Netflix called Getting Organized with The Home Edit. These ladies also wrote a book (LINK) which I have on my list to read. If you haven't seen it, I would highly recommend it. I literally hadn't even finished the first episode and I was itching to tackle unorganized spaces in my home. Today I'm going to share with you what I did in my closet to update it. I used some of the key techniques I saw in the Netflix show.
We are lucky to have a large walk in closet which we share. We also use this space to store suitcases and exercise equipment for easy access.
My first step in my closet makeover was to purge! After purging, I took the remaining clothing and organized it all by color. This was one of the biggest takeaways I got from The Home Edit. I have never done this before. My closet has always been organized by items; all short sleeves together, long sleeves together etc. I am anxious to see if organizing by color will work for me. I included both summer and winter clothes together by color since I had the space. If you don't have enough space, you could still do this with your current season items. My only exception to this was shorts. I did put those all together in one area.
I updated my jewelry using Stackers from The Container Store. I love how they come with these clear acrylic lids which keep jewelry clean, but also allow me to see everything all at once. I can continue to add to them as I add more jewelry to my collection.
For my purses, they recommended these Chrome Metal Purse Hooks. This again is the first time I have ever hung my purses and I love that I can see them . They make a pretty statement. For clutches, I grabbed from The Container Store a clear bin to put them in. Beside the clutches, a clear tray holds my perfume bottles.
I added a faux fur rug to the floor to warm up the space. A small stool helps me reach my shoes on the highest shelf.
By hanging more items, I left myself plenty of room on the shelves for denim, t-shirts, and shoes. You can see more up close shots of all of these below.
