A Surprise Spa Weekend at Craigendarroch Hilton Suites: The Perfect Scottish Reset

Sometimes the best trips are the ones you didn't plan yourself. Last weekend, my partner whisked me away on a completely surprise getaway to Craigendarroch Hilton Suites in Ballater, and I am still thinking about it. Two nights in a beautiful country club and spa in the heart of Royal Deeside, surrounded by Scottish mountains, log fires, and the kind of quiet that properly resets your nervous system. Exactly what I didn't know I needed.

We left Aberdeen just after half five on Friday evening, and by half six we were pulling up to the hotel. That's one of the things I love about living in Scotland: proper luxury is never as far away as you'd think. If you've been considering a spa weekend in Scotland and have been wondering whether Craigendarroch Hilton Suites is worth it, I can save you the deliberating. It absolutely is.

The Suite: Bigger Than You're Expecting

When my partner mentioned a “hotel suite,” I wasn't quite prepared for what we actually walked into. The room was enormous. We had two full bathrooms, a separate kitchen and lounge area, a private balcony off the living space, a huge bedroom, and another private balcony off the bedroom. There were two of us rattling around what felt like an apartment. The whole space was warm, well-appointed, and had that quality of finish that makes you immediately want to put your phone away and just be somewhere.

If you're looking at Craigendarroch for a romantic weekend, a birthday trip, or genuinely just a proper break from everyday life, the suites are special. Not pretentious or cold the way some “luxury” spaces can feel, just genuinely lovely and comfortable.

Day One: Dinner, Wine, and an Exceptional Espresso Martini

We freshened up and headed down to the bar for dinner that first evening. Neither of us wanted anything fussy after a Friday, so fish and chips and steak pie it was. Simple, done well, exactly right. I had a glass of wine and my partner had an espresso martini, that honestly might be one of the best he's had. A strong start.

Day Two: The Wellness Day (And the Best Brunch in Ballater)

Morning: Gym and Squash

The plan for Saturday was a full wellness day, and we committed to it properly.

We started in the hotel gym first thing in the morning. It's a compact space, but it was quiet, had everything we needed, and was in great condition. We spent about an hour and a half in there together. I'll be honest: I'm not a gym person by nature. My partner is very much a gym person. But there was something genuinely lovely about doing it together, in a beautiful place, with nowhere else to be. I actually enjoyed it more than I expected.

After the gym we had a squash court booked for 45 minutes. I was absolutely useless. I don't think a single one of my shots went where I intended. But we laughed a lot, which is arguably the point.

Brunch in Ballater

After all of that we got showered and drove the short distance down into Ballater for brunch at The Bothy. Ballater is a small, beautiful Royal Deeside village and it has a lovely unhurried feeling to it. The Bothy was perfectly cosy: we had full cooked breakfasts and sat in front of a log-burning stove. Then we wandered around the village, and had another coffee before heading back to the hotel.

The Spa Afternoon

The afternoon was entirely devoted to the spa, and this is where the weekend really settled into something special.

We spent close to three hours in the pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room. I genuinely lost count of how many rounds we did. In, out, hot tub, sauna, back to the pool. That particular cycle of heat and water is one of those genuinely simple pleasures that does something good for you on a cellular level. By the time we eventually got out I felt completely unwound in a way that a normal weekend at home just doesn't achieve.

An Unexpected Visitor (and the Most Perfect Sunset)

Back in the suite and getting ready for dinner, we had the balcony doors open to let in the evening air. And then, completely unbothered and entirely uninvited, a robin hopped in through the doors and proceeded to walk around the suite for a good ten minutes. Just exploring. Totally at ease. It was one of those small, lovely moments that you don't get at home, and it made us both stop and just watch. He eventually decided he'd seen enough and hopped back out the way he came. I think about him more than I probably should.

Once we were ready we took a walk around the resort before heading to dinner, exploring the grounds and properly taking in the surroundings. We found the rock garden and sat for a while watching the sun go down over the hills. It was genuinely beautiful, that particular low golden light you get in Scotland when the evening is clear. A moment that needed nothing added to it.

A quick note on the dinner itself: we had been recommended a local Indian restaurant, Lochnagar, by family who speak very highly of it. Unfortunately Saturday night was not its best showing: the service was chaotic, the wait was significant, and the portions were smaller than expected. I genuinely think something was off that evening rather than it being representative of the restaurant, given the reviews it usually gets, so I wouldn't write it off entirely. But it's worth having a backup plan for Saturday night just in case.

Day Three: A Long Lie, the Spa Again, and a Sunday Roast

Check-out on Sunday was 10am, but we could keep using the facilities afterwards, which is a brilliant policy and one that completely changes how a final morning feels.

We had a long lie, checked out on time, and then headed back to the gym for another 45 minutes. After that, the pool and sauna for another two hours. There's something wonderful about a Sunday morning spa session with no agenda and no rush. Just warm water and quiet.

Then we drove back towards Aberdeen and stopped at the Boat Inn for a Sunday roast on the way home, which was the perfect full stop to the weekend. Proper roast, relaxed atmosphere, that particular satisfaction of a meal at the end of a lovely trip.

What Makes Craigendarroch Worth the Trip

The Craigendarroch Hilton Suites sits in a genuinely beautiful part of Scotland, and that setting does a lot of the work before you've even unpacked. Royal Deeside is stunning in any season, and Ballater as a base for a day of exploring is a real pleasure.

But beyond the location, what made this weekend work was the balance of things to do. The gym and spa facilities mean you can build a genuinely wellness-focused trip without it feeling restrictive or spa-retreat-intense. You can swim, use the sauna, have a proper cooked breakfast in the village, walk, eat well, and sleep deeply. That combination is harder to find than it sounds.

The suites are genuinely impressive and the kind of accommodation that feels like a step above a standard hotel room in a way that actually matters. The extra space, the two bathrooms, the balcony: these things change how a stay feels. You're not just sleeping in a room, you're actually living somewhere for a couple of days.

Is a Spa Weekend at Craigendarroch Worth It?

Without hesitation: yes. It's the kind of trip that feels genuinely restorative rather than just a change of scenery. Two nights is the right amount of time: long enough to fully arrive and unwind, short enough that you come home refreshed rather than ready for another holiday.

If you're based in Scotland and looking for a luxury spa weekend that doesn't require a flight, Royal Deeside should be at the top of your list. And if you're visiting Scotland and want to experience something away from the cities, Craigendarroch and the surrounding area is a beautiful and underrated choice.

It was exactly the reset I didn't know I needed, and I'm already thinking about when we can go back.
