DIY Farmhouse Chalkboard & Metallic Knob Magnets

Today I'm sharing a couple of fun DIY projects that I recently tackled using Devine Color + Target! I have a thing for chalkboards!  I have several throughout my home.  For the recent One Room Challenge, I painted an entire wall in green chalkboard paint.  For me, there is something so nostalgic about them.  My school memories were not of smart boards and computers, but instead of chalkboards, textbooks, pencils, and paper.  I remember fondly the chalk dust and writing my spelling sentences up on the board.  Wow, it's crazy to think how much the world has changed in just a short time!   Some might even call chalkboards a vintage item nowadays! 🙂  I think there is something inspiring and creative about a chalkboard!  I love what a fun addition they are to almost any decorating style.  A quick change of a quote or art and you have a whole new look.

While out antiquing recently, I came across the most beautiful frame painted in really bad metallic paint!  I knew as soon as I saw it, that it needed to be my next chalkboard.  This one is going to be used on my mantel or moved around wherever I need a new vignette.

My go-to chalkboard paint has been Devine Color.  I used it for my chalkboard wall in the office and I used it again today for this project.  It is thick, creamy, and goes on smoothly.  In addition, it dries fast and without streaks.  Two coats are all you need for good coverage.  I purchase my paints in the Home Improvement section at Target.  You can find a whole range of products such as spray paint, specialty- metallic, dust, chalkboard, and wallpaper all in the same aisle right by the light bulbs.  Devine Color products are designed to coordinate with your favorite Target home decor to make designing a space a whole lot easier.  I used green chalkboard paint on my office wall but wanted a more traditional black for this project.

How to Make a Farmhouse Vintage Chalkboard

In order to prep this old frame, I sanded off the finish and cleaned it thoroughly with soap and water to remove dirt and debris.  Using a Devine Color white spray paint, I coated the frame with several coats then once dry, distressed the edges with sandpaper to give it a more antique look.

After measuring the inside of my frame, I headed to my hardware store and had a thin piece of plywood cut to fit.  Two coats of Devine Color by Valspar Chalkboard Paint in coal were enough to get the coverage I needed on the board.

Before using a chalkboard, you always need to season it.  You can read HERE all about seasoning a chalkboard.

This frame still had the little clips to hold the glass so all I had to do was insert my new chalkboard and clip it into place!

I LOVE how it turned out!  It is the perfect farmhouse vintage piece.  I put a summer quote on it to reflect the summer season, but love that I can change that out whenever I feel like something new.  Who doesn't think life in flip-flops is better?  I know I sure do!

While at Target, I also picked up several cans of Devine Color by Valspar Radiant Metals spray paint.  I had a few random wood knobs leftover from a thrift store challenge gift I received in the mail, so I decided to give them a makeover as well. I am always in need of more magnets around our house and can never seem to find any when I need them!

Metallic Painted Wooden Knob Magnets

I started this project by taping off areas of the knobs that I did not want spray painted.  I opted for a cross, stripes, and square designs.  After taping off, I used Devine Color that I purchased at Target to paint the knobs.  After drying, I used metallic paint pens and a sharpie marker to fill in the geometric areas in a variety of colors.  Finally, I attached a stick on round magnet to the underside of my knobs and with just a few minutes of my time, I had a set of unique and functional customized magnets!

We have a great patio space and enjoy many evenings outdoors. I decided to show you a quick way to put both these projects to work on a cute little bar cart entertaining station. I found this old wooden cart for $10 at my local thrift store.

It's always handy to have drinks available at the ready when entertaining outdoors and this cart is the perfect accessory!  I picked up a few accessories from Target such as an outdoor blanket for time spent around the fire pit and a beverage cooler, cute bicycle tray, copper mugs, and a table runner.  I made little drink labels and stuck them right on the metal cooler with my new magnets.  I moved my big chalkboard right on outdoors and set it up beside the bar cart for some summer inspiration. I stuck with my favorite summer quote, but writing your menu for the evening dinner is another way to use your new chalkboard.
