Hi friends, today I’m talking about marriage!  If you’re married then you know without me saying that marriage can be hard!  Big things happen in life that will either draw you closer together or pull you apart, but it’s the little things that happen that can create a long-lasting rift in an otherwise good relationship.  It can seem silly to say them out loud, but simple things can build up and affect your relationship if you do not either address them or change your attitude about them.  For me, one of those things was my hubbies habit of throwing his clothes on the floor.  I’m an organized person and really like things to be just so in my space. There’s nothing worse to me than going into our bedroom each night and having to feel my way through a minefield of clothing to get to my side of the bed.  And let’s not even mention how many times I’ve tripped over shoes getting up in the night and going to the bathroom!  It was a constant nagging problem that really started to affect my feelings towards him.  I really found myself getting angry about it and lashing out about other things when it was really the clothes that were bothering me.  I would visibly sigh each time I would walk in our bedroom.  This space which was supposed to be a happy and peaceful spot was anything but for me.

One day, I was angrily picking up his clothes for the umpteenth time and was struck by our engagement photo on the wall beside our bed.  It is a framed and matted photo that was at our wedding.  Instead of a guestbook, guests were asked to write us well wishes and encouragement.  I stopped and read again the insight that was written by many who had been married for many years.  More than once it was written, let the little stuff go.  I realized then that I had a choice to continue to be angry or to let it go.  I decided that instead of being upset, I was going to use these moments of picking up after him to instead concentrate on the positives in our relationship and there is sure a lot of positives!  He’s a good man and a wonderful father.  My partner who I love doing life with.  He throws his clothes on the floor, but that was no longer going to be a deal breaker for me.  I was going to serve him by picking up his clothes and I was going to be thankful. Would it have been great to have him suddenly see a need to pick up after himself?  Yes, but if he never did, I was going to still be thankful for the multitude of other things he does for me each day.

What is it in your relationship that you need to change your attitude about?  It’s the perfect time of year to show your loved ones you care and to let go of the little things you can’t control.

As I was thinking through Christmas gifts this year, I decided I wanted to do something meaningful for him.  I know how much he loves watches.  He has a handful of them and likes to wear different ones every day.  One he doesn’t have yet is a Jord Watch.  I absolutely adore mine, so I am super excited to be giving him one this year for Christmas.  What truly excites me is that Jord is now engraving!  You can choose to have an engraving put on either the watch back plate or on the side of the cedar wood presentation box that comes with each watch.  The options include a block or a script font.  I chose to place a script font engraved with the message, “Always and Forever” on the watch itself.  Every time he wears it, I want him to be reminded that I am committed to our marriage and that I will always work to make our marriage stronger.

A watch engraving is a meaningful holiday gift for someone you love. For character limitations and delivery time, see the website.

This is a great reminder to let the little things go! The watch is beautiful, I hope he loves it.

  2. Great post Amy! The watch is beautiful. I just love JORD!

  3. What a sweet and special gift Amy! The quote you put on the back is so sweet!!

  4. Sarah says:

Totally agree about letting the little things go! So important in a marriage.

  5. Nuala Raftery says:

I had this problem when we first got married. Sweaty running gear was the worst part. I solved it by placing a laundry basket at the point where my husband usually dropped his clothes. He just dropped them into the basket. Eventually I was able to move the basket into our bathroom and he continued to drop them in there.

  6. Ha, I re-arranged our bedroom so that the Husband’s side of the room is away from the door and the bed blocks the mess 🙂

I still need to get him a gift for Christmas – good idea!

  7. Amanda says:

I love this post – I have the same problem and have to remind myself regularly that clothes on the floor is a little problem that I shouldn’t get so upset over! 🙂 The watch is beautiful!

  8. Sarah says:

Girl, I feel you with the clothes on the floor. Though I can’t say mine don’t sometimes end up there, too. It’s the perfect time of year to let those things go and focus on the positive! I love that you can engrave the watch – so sweet.
