I'm thrilled to be back this month with another Farmhouse Friends blog project. I definitely enjoy adding special farmhouse touches throughout my home. For me, farmhouse style exudes comfort, casual living. A style that is far from perfect and is curated over time. For me, scouring antique and thrift stores to find lived in pieces that I can recreate with my own touch is part of the fun.
This is our second month of farmhouse projects, so if you missed last month's farmhouse project, you can see how I made a stenciled pillow cover here.
Once in a while, you come across a piece that is just too good to be true and that is exactly what you are going to see in today's makeover.
I found this stool while out hunting with my daughter at a local vintage shop. It was actually underneath another piece of furniture just like buried treasure.
It was dirty and needed a little fix, but this ugly duckling had a lot of potential.
Farmhouse Stool Makeover
Supplies Needed:
Black Chalk Paint
Sandpaper
Wood glue (if your piece needs any repairs)
Upholstery Tacks
Fabric
I started this project by cleaning it with soapy water, removing the upholstery tacks and fabric. The padding was still in good shape, so it did not need to be replaced.
The next step was to sand down the piece with sandpaper to remove the finish.
After sanding, I used some wood glue to fix a loose brace.
Next, I painted two coats of black chalk paint.
After drying, I used my sand paper to distress in a few areas to give it a more lived-in look.
The final step was to cut my fabric and fold it under and tack into place with upholstery tacks.
Here is the finished stool!
I love the little details of the rounded legs and carved circles which give this piece the character and charm.

Thank you, Julie! It was a fun project! 🙂
Am a new follower but I love your blog. Nice job on your latest project. I also LOVE looking for tired items and bringing them back to life. I noticed you sanded before you used the chalk paint. I am in love with chalk paint but was told there is no need to sand prior to painting. That is one of the perks of chalk paint. So I was wondering why you decided to sand?
Hi Donna! So happy to have you following! I always sand out of habit, but this particular piece was pretty grimy and had a finish on it. A little sanding took it off and just gave me a clean slate to start with.
