Weathered Wood Look to Refresh a Pine Plank Ceiling

Update a pine plank ceiling with a weathered wood look with paint and stain.

Hi guys!  If you follow me over on Instagram (and I hope you do!), you may have already seen the gorgeous new look we gave to our family room ceiling.  I knew upon moving in, that I wanted to do something with the outdated wood look, but I just wasn't sure.  I also knew it would take some convincing of Greg to paint that baby.  My first instinct was white, but my painter talked me into a whole other look and by golly, I am so glad we listened.

I am a fan of wood, but with the floors and the ceilings the same color, it felt a little closed in and 1980's wood cabin to me.  Doing a weathered wood treatment was the perfect compromise and created a statement piece in the space.  You can't help but look up when you enter the room.  It was a super big job and I'm certainly glad I didn't have to do it!  Though with a few tips and pointers I got from my painter, it is a DIY you could take on (with scaffolding) or replicate on another wood treatment in your home.

This gives you an idea of all that wood!

Here is the beginning state of the staining to create that weathered look.  I love the dimension the stain gives it.

How to Refresh a Pine Plank Ceiling with a Gray Weathered Wood Look

  • 123 Primer tinted to gray
  • Dark gray, and tan stain, mixed with an acrylic glaze
  • Paint primer on with a sprayer
  • Hand brush glaze on in small sections working your way across the wood
  • Tweak each area to add more or less glaze after you stand back and look at it.

According to my painter, this was a trial and error.  She mixed and sampled until she found just the right combination that we wanted.  I would highly recommend you grab a sample of the colors you like and play around with them on scrap wood until you get the look you want.

Greg and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out!

What a huge difference, don't you think?

Stay tuned next week for a full reveal of this room.
