Create With Me~ Pinecone Fire Starters

Today is another Create With Me Challenge day!

Create With Me challenges are hosted by Lindi from Love Create Celebrate and Samantha from Little Bits of Home.  At the beginning of each month, we will ask YOU to vote on a material to create something from. Then, at the end of the month, we will share our project using that material and host a link party for you to showcase your own projects using the material! How fun is that?!

You can catch up on the previous two months challenge posts here and here.  This month you chose pinecones!  I love working with items from nature.  They are cheap and readily available!  Can't beat that.  We have a wood burning fireplace and one of our favorite things to do in the winter is making a fire in our fireplace.  It's such a warm and cozy feeling and I just love the crackling sounds the wood makes.  We have a wood pile, but with the outdoor elements, our wood is often damp, so we use fire starter logs to get it going.  I had seen this idea of making pinecones into starters, so I thought I'd give it a try.  As it turns out, it is really easy to do and they turned out so cute that I may just give them as gifts!

Supplies:

Pinecones

Wax flakes

Wicking

Color Wax blocks or a Crayon

Essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

1.Start with dry pinecones and attach wicking.  I made a loop and tucked the ends into the pinecone securely with a pair of scissors.

2. Heat wax flakes, color block or crayon, and 10-20 drops of essential oil in a boiler pot.

3. Holding the pinecone by the wick, dip it in the wax, making sure to cover all sides and let excess wax drain off.

4. Place on a wax paper-lined baking sheet and let dry for 15 minutes.

5. Continue to dip and let dry 3-4 more times until pinecone is sufficiently coated.

6. Tie on a ribbon and small tag to make into a cute gift for a neighbor or friend.
