I hope you had a chance to see yesterday's new monthly series, Back to Basics. We are excited to introduce you to a new decor topic and offer our best tips, ideas, and solutions. I shared with you a summer table setting which featured my favorite flower, sunflowers! I hope you'll enjoy this new series and find it helpful.
Today we are talking living room/ family room spaces for our weekly Room by Room showcase series. Last week was all about the kitchen. Our house came with two spaces a living room and a family room. We decided to utilize our living room space as an office. We simply did not have a need for another large living space. With both the family room and our full basement, our greater need was for a home office. We transformed our home office space for this spring's One Room Challenge and you can see all the details on that space HERE.
Our family room space is our main television viewing area and being right off the kitchen, it gets a lot of use. Because of the openness of the space, I wanted to keep it very consistent with the rest of the decor. After a lot of searching and trials and mistrials, I have found a home style which I love. I am calling it modern farmhouse. I use a lot of black to anchor my spaces and that is a consistent theme throughout our home. Our family room is probably the most farmhouse of all of our spaces in our home. Lots of layers, neutral colors, textures, and wall art. It is a comfortable and happy place to spend time together as a family.
I think achieving farmhouse style is simply incorporating well loved, recycled, upcycled, and simple practical elements all in one place. You do not need to live on a farm to have a farmhouse style. Timeless elements such as vintage pieces, rustic wood, greenery, a neutral color palette, and lots of texture can add a little farmhouse charm to your home.
So when you are thinking about what style works for you and your family, you may want to consider adding some of these elements.
You can read more about my black hutch in the corner that believe it or not was from IKEA, HERE. This post is all about my new couches which we purchased last winter. I am totally in love with them! Behind the couch is a salvaged piece of a bench which I made into an art piece. See how I transformed the bench from the junk pile, HERE.
