There is something about a modern farmhouse bathroom that just feels right. The mix of warm, rustic textures with clean, contemporary lines creates a space that manages to be both calming and full of character. When we finally took the plunge and remodelled our master bathroom after twelve years of living with the original, it was this very blend of old and new that became the guiding thread for every single decision we made.
Looking back at where it all started, it is hard to believe it is the same room. We had lived with dated tiles, awkward fixtures, and a layout that never quite worked for over a decade. The patience required to wait for the right time to tackle this project was genuinely tested, but having that time to think, plan, and gather inspiration meant that by the time the work began, the vision was crystal clear. A modern farmhouse bathroom that felt elevated but still perfectly liveable. Luxurious in the details but grounded in warmth.

If you followed along during the renovation process, you will have seen the before pictures and the midway update. But now the dust has settled (literally), this is the full reveal of how it all came together and exactly what went into creating a space that has honestly become one of my favourite rooms in the entire house.
Every good bathroom renovation starts with a spark of inspiration, and ours came from three very specific things: a bold black and white patterned cement tile, copper faucets, and gooseneck barn lights. Those three elements set the tone for the entire farmhouse bathroom remodel before a single wall was touched.
The cement tile was always going to be the showstopper. Rather than using it on the floor, we made it the full accent wall behind the vanity, and the impact is everything we hoped for. The intricate black and white pattern has an artisan, almost Mediterranean quality that gives the space its visual anchor. It is bold without being overwhelming because everything else in the room works around it rather than competing with it.

Once that tile was chosen, the rest of the design decisions started falling into place almost naturally. The copper wall-mounted faucets brought warmth and a slightly industrial edge against the graphic pattern of the tile. And those gooseneck barn lights from Barn Light Electric? They were the finishing touch that pulled the whole aesthetic together and gave the room personality that you simply cannot get from standard bathroom lighting.
What I love about modern farmhouse design is that it does not follow one rigid formula. It is about layering textures, mixing finishes, and choosing pieces that feel like they have been collected over time rather than ordered from a catalogue in one afternoon. That was the feeling we wanted to capture here. A bathroom that looks like it has been thoughtfully put together, with every detail earning its place.
Tile choices can make or break a farmhouse style bathroom, and we spent a long time getting ours right. Using the patterned cement tile as a feature wall behind the vanity was the hero move of the whole remodel. It creates a dramatic focal point the moment you walk in, framing the double mirrors and copper fixtures beautifully.
For the shower, we went with classic white subway tile from floor to ceiling. It is timeless, it is clean, and it provides the perfect contrast to the bold patterned wall without the two areas fighting each other. Subway tile is one of those choices that works in almost every style of bathroom, but in a farmhouse setting it feels particularly at home. There is something about those neat, staggered rows against shiplap walls that just belongs.
On the shower floor, we chose a black and white penny tile that ties the colour story together and echoes the graphic quality of the cement tile accent wall without matching it too closely. The mix of tile patterns at different scales is one of the things that gives this bathroom its layered, collected feel.

For the main bathroom floor, we went with wood-look porcelain tile throughout. It brings the warmth and texture of natural timber without any of the moisture concerns that real wood would create in a bathroom environment. Wood-look tile has come on enormously in recent years, and the quality of the grain and colour variation now is incredibly realistic. It softens the space beautifully alongside the harder lines of the subway tile and adds that rustic farmhouse layer that makes the room feel cosy rather than clinical.
The double vanity is the centrepiece of the room, and it was designed to feel like a piece of furniture rather than a fitted bathroom unit. Built from reclaimed wood with a beautifully rustic finish, it has open shelving underneath that keeps the whole area feeling airy and grounded at the same time. The open shelves are styled with woven baskets, neatly folded white towels, and a few copper accessories that tie in with the faucets and lighting above.

The two white vessel sinks sit on top of the timber surface, and their clean, modern shape is the perfect counterpoint to the rough, characterful wood beneath them. This is one of those combinations that sums up what modern farmhouse style is all about: something sleek and something rustic, sitting together in a way that feels completely natural.
The wall-mounted copper faucets are a genuine everyday luxury. They have the most beautiful traditional detailing, and because they are mounted on the wall rather than the vanity, the countertop stays cleaner and the whole arrangement looks more intentional. Over time, the copper has developed a lovely patina that only adds to the character of the space.
Above each sink hangs a rustic wood-framed oval mirror that softens the strong geometry of the patterned tile behind. The pair of them, flanked by those copper gooseneck barn lights, creates a vanity wall that honestly looks like it belongs in an interiors magazine. It is the kind of view that makes you stop and appreciate the space every single morning.
The walk-in shower was one of the most carefully considered areas of the whole modern farmhouse bathroom remodel. We wanted something that felt spacious, clean, and modern, while still connecting to the warmth of the rest of the room.
The copper shower panel is the standout feature here. It is a full tower system with a rainfall head at the top, multiple body jets, and handheld controls, all in that same warm copper finish that runs through the entire space. Against the floor-to-ceiling white subway tile, it reads as both functional and sculptural. It is one of those pieces that elevates the daily shower from routine to ritual, and it ties the shower area back to the copper fixtures on the vanity wall beautifully.

A built-in niche keeps shampoo and essentials within easy reach without cluttering the clean lines of the tile. The concrete shower curb adds another textural layer and creates a neat transition between the penny tile in the shower and the wood-look tile on the main floor.
The glass enclosure was installed shortly after these photos were taken, and it made a significant difference. Frameless glass keeps the sightlines open and lets the tile work and copper panel do the talking. If you are debating between a glass enclosure and a shower curtain for a farmhouse style bathroom, glass is worth the investment. It elevates the entire space and makes it feel more like a spa retreat.
It is the smaller details that take a modern farmhouse bathroom from simply looking good to genuinely feeling special. The white shiplap walls throughout the space (everywhere except the shower and the accent tile wall) bring that signature farmhouse texture and give the room a sense of architecture that plain painted walls simply cannot match.
An industrial black glass-front storage cabinet provides both practical storage and a striking design moment. The dark metal frame adds contrast and weight to the mostly neutral palette, while the glass panels let you see the neatly stored towels and linens inside. On top sits a vintage tobacco basket, one of those quintessential farmhouse accessories that adds instant character and charm.
A vintage industrial school chair sits in the corner holding a fiddle leaf fig in an aged black pot. It is the kind of styling touch that makes a room feel lived in and personal rather than staged. These are not pieces that came from a bathroom department. They are pieces that were collected and repurposed, and that is what gives the space its authenticity.
The black and white woven bath mat with tasselled fringe, a jute runner by the vanity, and the mix of woven baskets throughout all add layers of texture that keep the room feeling warm and inviting despite the predominantly neutral colour palette. Every surface and material brings something different to the overall atmosphere, from the rough grain of the reclaimed wood to the smooth sheen of the copper to the crisp geometry of the subway tile.

Having lived with this space for some time now, there are a few design principles from our remodel that I think translate really well to any modern farmhouse bathroom project, whether you are starting from scratch or simply refreshing what you have.
Using a bold tile as an accent wall rather than on the floor is a brilliant way to create impact without overwhelming the room. It keeps the floor surface calm and practical while giving you a stunning focal point that draws the eye the moment you walk in.
Mixing metal finishes thoughtfully adds depth and character. Our copper faucets, lights, and accessories sit alongside matte black hardware on the cabinet and towel hooks. The key is to choose one dominant metal and let the others play supporting roles rather than splitting attention equally.
Letting one element be the hero makes every decision easier. For us, the patterned cement tile accent wall was the starting point and everything else worked around it. Whether your hero is a freestanding bath, a beautiful vanity, or a show-stopping tile, building outward from one anchor piece creates a more cohesive result than trying to make every element equally bold.
Shiplap is your best friend for adding architectural interest on a budget. It transforms plain walls into something with genuine texture and character, and it works beautifully as the quiet backdrop that lets bolder elements shine.
Open shelving on a vanity keeps a bathroom feeling spacious and inviting. Styled with baskets, rolled towels, and a few decorative pieces, it avoids the heaviness of closed cabinetry and gives the room that curated, collected quality that modern farmhouse style thrives on.

After living with the finished result for a good while now, there are a few things I am so glad we did and a couple of things I would keep in mind for anyone planning something similar.
Spending more on fixtures you touch and see every day is never a waste. The copper faucets, the shower panel, the barn lights. These are the pieces that define how a bathroom feels to actually use, not just how it looks in photographs. They are the details that make it feel genuinely luxurious rather than simply nice to look at.
Patience with the planning stage pays off enormously. Twelve years is obviously longer than most people would wait, but having that extended window to refine the vision meant there were no regrets once the work was done. Take the time to get clear on your vision before you start ripping things out.
Do not underestimate lighting. The gooseneck barn lights completely changed the atmosphere of this space. Good lighting in a bathroom is transformative, and farmhouse-style fixtures offer so much more character than standard recessed spotlights.
Invest in one statement piece that takes your breath away. For us, it was the patterned tile wall. Every time someone walks into the bathroom, that is the first thing they see and comment on. Having one element that genuinely wows makes the whole room feel considered and special, even if everything else is relatively simple.
A modern farmhouse bathroom blends the warmth and character of traditional farmhouse design with cleaner, more contemporary lines. Think natural materials like reclaimed wood and stone, neutral colour palettes, vintage-inspired fixtures, and rustic details like shiplap or barn-style lighting, all balanced with modern amenities and streamlined finishes. The result is a space that feels cosy and full of personality without looking dated.
Costs vary hugely depending on the scope of work, your location, and the materials you choose. A full remodel including new tiles, fixtures, vanity, and lighting can range from a few thousand pounds for a budget-friendly refresh to significantly more for high-end finishes and structural changes. Our best advice is to invest in the pieces you will interact with daily, like faucets and lighting, and be strategic about where you save.
Subway tile is a classic choice for walls and works beautifully in a farmhouse setting. For accent walls, patterned cement tiles in black and white create stunning focal points. Wood-look porcelain makes a practical and warm flooring choice, while penny tiles or hex tiles work well on shower floors. The most effective approach is to use tiles at different scales and mix patterns with plains for a layered, collected look.
Absolutely. Some of the most impactful farmhouse details are surprisingly affordable. Adding shiplap to your walls, swapping out light fixtures for barn-style sconces, incorporating woven basket storage, and using classic white subway tile are all achievable without a full renovation budget. Focus on texture and character over expensive materials.
Neutral tones form the foundation: whites, creams, warm greys, and natural wood tones. From there, copper, matte black, or brushed brass fixtures add warmth and contrast. Black and white patterned tiles can add bold graphic interest while keeping within the neutral palette. The key is to keep the base neutral and let materials and textures provide the visual interest rather than relying on colour.
Scale your choices to suit the space. Use lighter tiles and paint to keep things feeling open, incorporate a single farmhouse statement piece like a vintage mirror or barn-style sconce, and lean into texture through baskets, linen towels, and natural materials. Shiplap or beadboard on a single accent wall can add enormous character without overwhelming a smaller room.
Gooseneck barn lights, wall-mounted sconces, and vintage-inspired pendants all work beautifully. Copper or brass finishes in particular bring a warmth that suits the farmhouse aesthetic. Warm-toned bulbs enhance the cosy atmosphere, and wall-mounted fixtures tend to suit the look better than recessed spotlights. Placing lights at vanity height creates both practical task lighting and a flattering, welcoming glow.
This bathroom has honestly become the space in our home that makes me happiest. It is where the day starts and ends, and having it feel this considered and this comfortable has been worth every ounce of planning and patience that went into it. If you are thinking about tackling your own farmhouse bathroom remodel, I hope this gives you some genuine inspiration and a few practical ideas to work with.

Absolutely stunning! I love it and I’m so inspired! Who made your custom sink? I have been looking for something like that and haven’t been able to find much. Thank you and great work!
Thank you! Here is the link for the sinks: https://rstyle.me/~cz-9Hh7i
The wood vanity was made by a local contractor here in Cincinnati. I’m so glad you like it!
Would your local contractor be willing to provide plans or maybe we could contact him to build another one?
Email me at mylifefromhome@gmail.com and I’ll give you his phone number. You could give him a call and figure out what works best!
I love the Ballard mirrors and want to use them in my new bathroom. Did the contractor who built the vanity custom match the wood stain or did you pick a stain for him to use? It would sure save me if you can tell me! Gorgeous bathroom!
Hi Kathleen! Thank you for your sweet words on the bathroom. The stain was a custom mix of 2 which my painter put together. We did use Minwax and I want to say one of them was the gray. Not real helpful, I really should have written that down. Sorry!
This is indeed very beautiful. I just love this modern farmhouse bathroom. I really liked each and every detail of it. Much appreciated for sharing this post.

Hey! I LOVE this! Wow, beautiful. My husband and I are fixing up a home and we are trying to figure out our bathroom and I really want a make up area like you did. Do you happen to know the measurements of your bathroom? We will be working with an 8’x10’…this looks like it’s very close to that!
Oh, wow, you have a great taste.
I love DIY home improvement projects. We remodeled our kitchen recently and also used wood tile. It’s the best!
Right now we’re thinking about bathroom.. Your article gave me so much inspiration, thank you for that!
I really like t he idea about baskets as open storage choice. I think it always looks much better, especially in small rooms as it gives that “open” look. And all the colors you chose – they work together really well.
Overall your bathroom looks very modern but at the same time classy
Thank you so much!!

Wasn’t sure what exactly modern farmhouse style was but I can totally see it in your bathroom. Touches of rustic, natural elements with sophisticated features. It looks fantastic. Great job.
Thank you, Melissa! Yes. I love the mixture of elements. So glad you like it!
I love what you’ve done, but I have a question about the shower. Do you have a door or shower curtain to keep the water from getting on the floor? We are considering remodeling our small 80’s master bath and would love a more updated shower, but was wondering about keeping the water off the floor.
Hi, Kim! Yes. It just wasn’t installed yet and I couldn’t wait to give you guys the reveal. It is in now and I will be giving everyone a look on the blog later this week. It is glass with a door. Glad you stopped by!

Beautiful reno Amy! The black and white, and wood, and copper has me all heart-eyed!!
Your bathroom looks like it from a luxury hotel spa. Beautiful well done job. Its stunning. Pinning.
Thank you so much!!! I am thrilled that you like it as much as we do!
Great job-gorgeous bath! I am obsessed with those cement tiles. I have noticed them been featured recently on several home improvement shows so I investigated them for a new project. I ordered some samples from the west coast and 2 of the 3 arrived broken! So, naturally I am a bit worried about the durability. Did you have any issues with breakage or chipping during the install? Just curious.
Hi, Susan! Did you get them at the Cement Tile Shop? We did not have any trouble with them breaking at all. That’s a bummer that happened. I would definitely let them know. We are really happy with the quality of them. Glad you like my bathroom! It has been a long overdue project! 🙂
Gorgeous! I absolutely love all the details. The tile behind the sinks is amazing and I’m loving the open storage! So much more practical. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! The time you guys spent on this bathroom certainly payed off. All of the small details really add up to make this space look great. The intricately patterned tiles reduce the need for much home decor in the space, which is great given that bathrooms are hard to find home decor for.
Thank you, Charlotte! We couldn’t be any happier with how it turned out. It’s perfect for us and we can’t wait to start using it! I am so glad you liked it!
