Our church does an incredible outreach every Thanksgiving which we are honored to participate in. It's become somewhat of a tradition in our family and I look forward to doing it each year. Not only, does it help another family, but our family benefits from serving others together. It shows our children that we care about others. By making serving a routine, it just becomes part of our family culture. Our goal is that our children will then continue this practice as they grow older and have their own families.
Each box put together contains a complete Thanksgiving meal for 6-10 people. Our job is to follow the list, compile the items in the box and deliver it at the designated time. Super easy and something little ones can even participate in.
This year alone, over 85,000 meals will be given out to those in need! Can we give a woohoo!
My kids all helped with the purchasing of the items at the grocery and then packing the box.
The best part is seeing the line of cars at drop off and the hundreds of volunteers cheering you on as you go through the receiving line to drop off your box. Music is playing, horns are honking, people are cheering. That alone makes an impression on your children. Look how fun it is to serve others! Look at how we get to feel by helping someone else!
It's easy to get caught up in what we are planning and doing for the holidays. I certainly know we are guilty of this! Whether it's a food pantry, an outreach through your church or a local charity, or simply helping a neighbor or friend in need, I encourage you to make it a priority to put someone else first not only this holiday season, but year round. The joy you receive from it will be priceless.
I'd love to hear the ways your family serves others during the holiday season. Share in the comments below.
To life feeling like home!
