Putting Together a Terrarium

I told you how my house always seems to experience the winter blahs around this time of year, so one of my goals for February was to add some “green” to liven the place up! So I got right on this first goal and made a terrarium.

Here are the supplies I used:

I purchased a one gallon fish bowl and aquarium rocks from Wal-Mart.  To be honest, there was not too many available plants this time of year, so once I looked them all over, I decided to go with a desert theme.  Since we love AZ, this actually serves to remind me of our home there!

I purchased a variety of miniature cactuses and a couple of succulents.

I read that it is important to put gravel or pebbles in the bottom of the jar for drainage.

After the pebbles, I added a layer of soil.

Finally the cactuses.  The tricky part was not getting poked!

I finished it off with a small layer of pebbles.

Here is the finished product.

I read for cactuses in particular it is best to feed them with a liquid plant food.  I was able to find this Miracle- Gro which is specific for cactuses.  It says every time you water them to add a little food.

I looked across the internet and found a couple of other terrariums for inspiration.

What a great terrarium! How is it doing? I’ve been wanting to do one and bought everything, except I can’t find the activated charcoal and I thought that was necessary. If it isn’t though I’ll put mine together right now! lol
