Creating a Desk Space in Your Child’s Bedroom

IMG_5776

Both of my girls had requested to share a room when they were 3 and 4, now six years later, they wanted a change and needed to have some privacy.  With that mission, we separated the girls out this summer, giving Olivia her own room and reorganizing Emma's room.

Olivia wanted gray walls with turquoise accents.  We worked hard together to make it a peaceful spot with grown up touches.  Hopefully, this will be a space she will continue to love through her teen years.

You can read about her vanity project here and the medals and trophies project here.

Recently, she requested a desk space in her room.  Studying in the open office area was becoming increasingly difficult with the noise of dinner preparations and her younger brother bothering her.

The fact that she really wanted to study wasn't lost on me so we set about to make nothing into something for her in her room.

This small space was the space I targeted to make into a desk area for her.

It was a child's vanity table that used to have a mirror attached.  When we decided to use it for her current bedroom set up, we took off the mirror and ditched the broken stool.  It was just enough space to squeeze in a desk if we moved the pouf and found the right supplies.

This was the inspiration we worked off of from a recent trip to IKEA.

Do you see some similarities?

Our first awesome find was a turquoise chair from IKEA in their clearance section.  IMG_7014_2

It must have been our lucky day because all clearance was an additional 50% off because of a friends and family week.  This chair cost us only $30!

Next we cleared off the table and added a new sconce from IKEA.  Since the table space was limited, a sconce gave her more working room.  It is adjustable, which she can then use for reading in bed or at her desk.

Adding a new fabric covered cork board and a file wall holder completed the transformation.  You can read how I made the cork board for my home office, here.

She is thrilled with the transformation and I often find her quietly working at her new desk.  Definitely a job well done!

To life feeling like home!

XO,

Amy

  1. Love how you maximized her space to make her a desk and study area! Thanks for linking up at Creative Spark. Hope you’ll join us again this week 🙂
