This is one of those projects you wish you would have done a long time ago! I had heard of Smart Tiles which are peel and stick tiles, but have never used them for any kind of project before. I always feared they would be hard to use or look fake somehow. Wow was I wrong on both accounts. I'm happy to admit that because I used them and they were both incredibly easy to use, but also look realistic!

My fireplace had a boring black surround. It certainly wasn't that bad, but I love the look of patterned tile around a fireplace. I decided to give Smart Tiles (LINK) a chance and in less than an hour, I had a brand new look!
BEFORE
AFTER
The tile I used is the Vintage Girona Dove (LINK).
The only tools you need are a utility knife, a straight edge, measuring tape, cutting mat, and pencil.
The backing of the tile peels off for you to position in place. If you make a mistake, they can be easily repositioned. Use your utility knife to cut tiles easily for areas that need cut. For clear instructions, watch this Smart Tiles video on their website (LINK).
This makes it a great solution for a rental or temporary residence. I would use these in the bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room as a backsplash. For the fireplace, Smart Tiles can be installed on a surface whose temperature does not exceed 49 °C (120 °F). Above all, it is important to avoid any direct contact with a heat source or direct exposure to heat. For us, we have only used this fireplace once so it's more decorative than anything.
You may notice that I moved my glass cloche vignettes for spring (LINK) in to this room. I like the way they are displayed together on this antique table.
