Painting Mason Jars with Chalk Paint for a Whole New Look

The perfect farmhouse vase is easy to make with a mason jar and chalk paint!

One of my favorite go-to decorating items is Mason jars.  I use them for storing things, decorating with and especially for displaying flowers.  I keep a stash of jars on hand to pull out anytime I get a grocery store bouquet.  They have a farmhouse style feel to them and fit right in with my decor.  The large ones are the perfect size for holding a flower arrangement.

I love displaying flowers in my home year round.  My favorites are Hydrangeas, Sunflowers, and any kind of greens.  It lightens up the home and makes me feel happy even on those gloomy days.

Today I am going to show you how I painted a mason jar with chalk paint for a whole new look.

DIY Painted Mason Jars

  • The first step was to brush on your chalk paint.  I made two jars; one white and one gray.
  • After drying, you can use a sanding block to distress the areas around the rim and lettering for a more rustic look.  I found you really need to use some elbow grease as the chalk paint does stick well.

  • I then wiped on a cream wax and buffed it when dry.  This preserves the paint and gives it a slightly antique look.
  • Tie a piece of twine around the rim and you are finished.

I found these beautiful Hydrangeas and greens at my local grocery.  I made two arrangements.  One with the flowers and one with just the greens.

Such a simple project that anyone can do.  I've found myself using them all the time and moving them throughout the house since the colors work in all of our rooms. They would also make amazing centerpieces at a party or wedding.
